Character and mood
Breathe is a preset for photos that need room. Not the room of an empty frame, but the feeling that a photo can actually breathe. The tones are light, soft, and open. No drama, no heavy contrast. Just a quiet brightness that draws attention to the subject without pushing everything else away.
Technically, Breathe lifts the shadows slightly so the darker areas stay visible and soft rather than disappearing into black. The highlights are gently pulled back, which creates an even, smooth spread of light across the whole image. Contrast is low to medium, colors are more muted than in the original file, with a subtle shift toward cool, neutral tones. Skin tones stay natural, whites feel genuinely white. The result is an image that is bright without being loud.
This preset works best for portrait photography in soft, diffused light. Think overcast days, shaded spots outdoors, or gentle window light inside. It also suits lifestyle photography, city scenes with open sky, and minimal interiors. For photos with heavy texture and hard shadows it is less of a match, because it does not have enough tonal depth to work against those darker areas effectively.
You reach for Breathe when you want the viewer to pause. When the mood of a photo needs to be softer than the moment actually was. When you are working on a series that should feel calm, a portfolio that carries one consistent feeling, or simply a shot where you know the subject is stronger than the light was at that point. Breathe turns an ordinary afternoon into something that feels like early morning.
A practical tip: after applying Breathe, adjust the exposure individually for each photo. The preset is calibrated for a neutral exposure, so for brighter or darker shots move the exposure slider half a stop to a full stop in either direction. That keeps the mood intact and prevents skin tones from going too pale or highlights from blowing out.
