Dutch Beach

The North Sea coast has its own kind of light. Not warm, not golden, not dramatic in the way southern beaches can be. What you get instead is a soft, overcast brightness that keeps contrast low and turns the sand a cool shade of grey. Dutch Beach was built for exactly that. The preset captures the feel of a weekday morning in May, when the surfers are already out but the promenade is still quiet.

Technically, the preset pulls warmth out of your images. Cool blue tones appear in the highlights, while yellow and orange tones in the sand are brought back to something closer to what the eye actually sees on a grey day. Exposure is slightly reduced to hold detail in a bright, pale sky, while shadows stay open and readable. Contrast sits in the midtones rather than the extremes, giving the image a flat, film-like tonal range. Colours are not boosted but toned down, which is the point.

The preset works best with beach surf photography: kitesurfers against a flat horizon, waves caught in backlight, portraits of people in wetsuits or rain jackets. It also suits reportage on the boulevard, in fishing villages, or around beach pavilions. Because the preset leans into diffuse, overcast light, it carries over well to street photography in coastal towns, where concrete, grey skies and faded colours are already part of the picture.

Choose Dutch Beach when you want a series that holds together without looking filtered. The preset brings consistency to images shot at different times of day, as long as the light was soft. It works less well in direct midday sun or with images that contain a lot of warm artificial light, where the colour balance will push too far into cold territory.

One practical tip: after applying the preset, adjust exposure on a per-image basis rather than touching the white balance. The strength of Dutch Beach is in that specific colour relationship between highlights, midtones and sand. Shift the white balance and the coastal feel disappears quickly. Use the exposure slider or the highlights control to balance each shot instead.
