Character and mood
Afternoon Rest captures the feeling of a summer afternoon when time slows to a crawl. Not the sharp light of morning, not the dramatic warmth of dusk, but the soft, slightly hazy quality of midday. This preset gives your photos a warmth that feels unhurried, like a day with nowhere to be and nothing to prove.
Technically, Afternoon Rest lifts the shadows to keep darker areas open and readable, while pulling back the highlights to avoid harsh peaks. The midtones shift toward yellow and orange, and the shadows carry a subtle warm undertone rather than going cool or neutral. Contrast is intentionally low, giving each photo a soft, almost dreamy quality. Colors are muted rather than saturated, like fabric left out in the sun for too long.
The preset works well with portraits shot in natural light: someone reading on a terrace, leaning against a wall, sitting in a garden. Street photos in quiet alleys, on slow market days, or in sun-drenched parks also respond well. Scenes with a lot of yellow, beige, or earthy tones, think old stone walls, sand, linen, or dry grass, will strengthen the effect naturally. If your scene has strong blue or grey tones, a small white balance adjustment toward warmth will help it settle in.
You reach for Afternoon Rest when the mood of a photo matters more than the crispness of the light. When you want an image that feels like it has been sitting in a shoebox for years. Not for photos that demand attention, but for the ones that hold you quietly for a moment, the ones with something familiar or faintly melancholic about them.
One practical tip: after applying the preset, bring the exposure slider down slightly if your original photo was already bright. Afternoon Rest works best on images that are just a touch underexposed. That gives the preset room to open up the shadows gently, without blowing out the highlights in the process.
