Character and mood

Rain Night was built for the street after midnight. When the asphalt is wet and neon signs double their colour in every puddle, this preset holds that tension. The mood is cool, a little raw, but never messy. Think of a city street at two in the morning with no one else around.

Technically, the preset pushes the shadows deeper without closing them off. Detail in dark corners stays readable, while the highlights from streetlights and neon get a slight glow. The colour tone shifts toward blue and cyan in the cooler areas, while warm light, orange street lamps, pink neon tubes, keeps its strength. Contrast is raised, but the tonal transition is gradual. Rain Night does not work with hard cuts. It builds depth layer by layer.

The preset works best with wet street scenes, reflections in puddles, pavements under artificial light, and architecture in the rain. Portraits in a wet urban setting also respond well, especially when the light on the face is mixed, part street lamp, part neon from across the road. Dry daytime situations are not a natural fit. The preset needs water, or at least wet surfaces, to fully show what it does.

You reach for Rain Night when you want a photo to feel like a film still. Not as a style exercise, but as a real street moment that happens to look cinematic. The preset helps you set that tone without spending a long time on manual adjustments. The starting point is solid, and there is room to push further from there.

A practical tip: lower the exposure of your photo by a third of a stop before applying the preset. Rain Night is designed for images that sit slightly on the dark side. If your highlights are still a little hot after applying it, bring the Highlights slider down in Lightroom before making any other changes. That way you get the full benefit of the depth the preset is built around.
