Character and mood
Sharp Light is not a gentle preset. It brings forward the hard, sculptural light you see in classic portrait photography, dark backgrounds, high contrast, deep shadows and light that cuts across a face. The result is a black and white portrait that draws attention immediately. Not because it shouts, but because it goes quiet in exactly the right places.
Technically, Sharp Light works through a significant increase in local contrast combined with strong shadow compression. Highlights are pulled back slightly so that skin texture stays visible, but they remain bright. The midtones shift toward darker grey, creating that characteristic chiaroscuro transition. The tone curve is pronounced and S-shaped. Colour plays no role, but luminance is adjusted per colour channel: skin tones are rendered lighter, blues and greens darker. This keeps detail in the face even when the subject has naturally fair skin.
This preset works best with female portraits shot in directional light: a window to the side, a single lamp, hard outdoor light in the shadow of a building. The more one side of the face falls into darkness, the stronger the effect. Smooth backgrounds or dark walls add to the depth. It also works well for close-ups where texture takes centre stage, skin, eyelashes, eyes.
You reach for Sharp Light when you want a portrait that says something about character or presence. Not the soft, flattering result, but the portrait where the person is fully there. The preset fits a deliberate, focused shoot rather than a casual reportage session. If your visual language already leans in that direction, Sharp Light gives it a clearer voice.
A practical tip: after applying the preset, adjust the exposure correction for each individual photo. Sharp Light assumes your base exposure is close to zero. If your image is slightly overexposed, you will lose the depth in the shadows. Bring the exposure down by half a stop to a full stop before making any local adjustments. After that, use a mask on the skin if you want to recover fine detail in the highlights.
Installation
Lightroom Classic & CC (desktop)
Unzip the downloaded file on your computer. Open Lightroom Classic and go to the Develop module. Right-click the Presets panel, choose 'Import Presets', and select the .xmp file. The preset appears in your list immediately and can be applied to any photo straight away.
Lightroom Mobile
Lightroom Mobile syncs presets via the cloud. Import the .xmp file into Lightroom CC on your desktop first. Once cloud sync completes, the preset is automatically available on your phone or tablet. An Adobe CC subscription is required for this sync feature.
Capture One
Unzip the file. Open Capture One and navigate to the Styles panel. Click the arrow next to 'Styles' and choose 'Import Style'. Select the .costyle file. The style is available in your library immediately. Works with Capture One version 21 and later.
DaVinci Resolve / Premiere Pro (3D LUT)
Copy the .cube file to your application's LUT folder. In DaVinci Resolve via Project Settings → Color Management → LUT folders. In Premiere Pro via the Lumetri Color panel → Creative tab → Look → Browse. The LUT works on both LOG and standard exposed video footage.
