Alienation

Alienation is not a gentle preset. There is something hard about it, something uneasy. That is exactly the point. Cities are full of people walking past each other, each locked in their own thoughts, their own light. This preset makes that visible. Not with subtlety, but with contrast.

Technically, Alienation pulls the highlights up and lets the shadows fall. Fall deep. The midtone range stays relatively intact, which keeps faces and figures in the light clear and readable, while everything around them sinks into darkness. Colors are restrained but not flat: warm tones in the light, cooler in the shadow. That temperature difference amplifies the sense of isolation. Contrast is high, and texture comes through strongly in surfaces like skin, concrete, and fabric.

This preset works best with images that already have strong light and shadow. Think street corners in harsh midday sun, people walking through a tunnel, a market square at noon. Figures standing half in light, half disappearing into dark. Architecture cut into geometric shapes by direct sunlight. Scenes with little color but a lot of tone. It can also work well for portraits in direct sun, as long as the light is hard and you want a striking result.

You reach for Alienation when you want a photo that says something immediately. When you want to capture the loneliness inside a crowded street, or the graphic force of light on concrete. It is not made for soft, diffuse situations. In overcast light or gentle shade it loses its purpose. But when the sun is burning and the shadows are sharp, it gives your image exactly that tension.

One practical tip: after applying the preset, adjust the exposure individually for each photo. Because of the high contrast, Alienation responds sensitively to the original exposure. A quarter stop down can make the difference between flat and just right. Use the adjustment brush to bring back faces that fall too far into shadow, without touching the rest of the frame.
