Flat Water

Flat Water is a preset for photographs where calm is the main subject. No heavy drama, no pushed colours. Just water as it is, with honest light. The preset strengthens that quietness without adding anything that was not already there.

Technically, Flat Water pulls highlights back slightly and lifts shadows just enough to keep contrast soft. The colours shift toward a neutral balance: cool tones in the water are not exaggerated, warm tones in the sky or bank are not suppressed. Saturation is kept low across all channels, so nothing competes for attention. The result is a tonal range that gives the eyes room to settle on the surface of the water rather than on the edit itself.

The preset works best on still or barely moving water: lakes, ponds, tidal flats at high or low tide, canals on a windless morning. Reflections in puddles on a street or in a harbour also respond well. Wherever water acts as a mirror and gives back the sky or the surroundings, Flat Water has something useful to do. Overcast days, soft morning light and flat backlighting are the ideal conditions to shoot in.

You reach for Flat Water when a landscape photograph already feels calm but picked up a little too much tension during editing. Or when you want a series of landscapes to share the same quiet character without having to adjust each image separately. The preset also works well as a starting point for a black-and-white conversion, because the neutral colour balance leaves no colour cast that would distort the grey tones.

One practical tip: after loading the preset, adjust the exposure manually for each image. Flat Water is calibrated for an average exposure, but reflections on water can vary considerably. A small correction of plus or minus one third of a stop is often enough to decide whether a surface looks luminous or flat in the wrong way.
