Character and mood

Honest Eye is a preset that hides nothing and exaggerates nothing. It gives a photograph the warmth of an old documentary project, without the sentimentality that sometimes comes with it. You see skin, wrinkles, glances, texture. What is there, is there. That kind of honesty sometimes takes courage from the photographer and from the subject. This preset supports that process rather than softening it.

Technically, Honest Eye brings the highlights down slightly and lifts the shadows, so no part of the face disappears into darkness or burns out in bright zones. The contrast does not come from the contrast slider itself, but from the midtones. That is where a portrait lives. The black point is held soft, creating a silky quality in darker areas. The whites are pulled back so that skin stays nuanced, even in harder light. Yellows and reds are converted into midrange greys that make skin look human, not like stone and not like wax.

The preset works best with portraits of men in everyday surroundings: a workplace, a street, a café, a waiting room. People who are occupied with something other than the camera. But it also fits deliberate portraits where you face the person directly and no distance appears between them and the viewer. Characterful faces, older faces, people whose lives show on their skin. Scenes with soft daylight or diffuse indoor light give the strongest results. Hard flash tends to work less well, unless you are using it intentionally for a more dramatic effect.

You choose Honest Eye when you are working on a reportage where atmosphere matters more than perfect exposure. When you want photographs that will still feel right in ten years. When you do not want the edit to be the first thing a viewer notices. The preset suits a style that looks for stillness in the image and gives the viewer space to feel something about the person they are seeing.

A practical tip: adjust the exposure for each photo individually before syncing the preset across a set. Honest Eye responds well to small exposure differences, but a photo that comes in too dark or too light will benefit from a manual correction first. After that, use the adjustment brush to brighten the eyes slightly if needed, without making them look unnatural. One small step to the left on Exposure in the brush is usually enough.
