Shadow Side

Shadow Side is not a flattering preset. It does not smooth things out or add warmth to make a portrait more comfortable. It pulls the image toward darkness, lets shadows fall deep and stay there, and cuts light sharply across the frame. What stays out of the light stays hidden. That tension is exactly the point.

Technically, the preset works by pushing exposure down and anchoring the black point low without crushing detail entirely. Shadows deepen without becoming flat. Midtones hold enough information to preserve skin texture, so the face does not disappear. The color grade leans cool in the shadows, with a restrained warmth in the highlights where light touches skin. That contrast between cold shadow and warm light gives the image its sense of depth and weight.

Shadow Side works best with side lighting, backlight, or a single hard source in a dark space. A window at night, a bare bulb, a streetlight from below. Portraits where part of the face fades into the background. Clothing that dissolves into black. A gaze that is only half visible. Scenes with too much ambient light lose the tension the preset needs to work. It amplifies contrast that is already there. It does not invent it.

Choose Shadow Side when you want a portrait that feels like a frame from a film. Heavy, quiet, and a little uncertain. It suits musicians, actors, documentary portraits, and any series where the mood carries more weight than the moment. The preset fits work that asks something of the viewer instead of explaining everything.

One practical note: reduce exposure by half a stop before applying the preset, especially when the background is lighter than you want it to be. Shadow Side performs best on images that are already underexposed by design. After applying, use a radial or brush mask on the eyes to bring back a small amount of shadow detail there. The atmosphere stays intact, and the subject stays readable.
