High pass
The High Pass filter isolates the fine edges and detail in your image and turns the rest grey. Combined with a blending mode like Overlay, that gives you controlled, crisp sharpening. It is a popular way to add sharpness without amplifying noise.
Duplicate your image, choose Filter, Other, High Pass and set a small radius until you just see the edges. Then set the layer to Overlay, Soft Light or Hard Light and the grey disappears, leaving only the sharpening. With a layer mask you can limit the sharpness to, say, the eyes and keep the skin soft. Tip: apply it to a smart object so you can fine-tune the radius afterward.
