ProRes

ProRes is a codec from Apple that combines high quality with smooth playback during editing. The files are fairly large, but your computer handles them easily, even with heavy edits. It's a popular choice for recording, editing and delivery in professional projects.

ProRes comes in different flavors, from the lighter ProRes 422 to the heavier ProRes 4444 with extra color and transparency information. In DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro, ProRes is ideal as an edit or master format, because your grade has plenty of room. On the Mac it works smoothly natively, on Windows support is a bit more limited. Tip: if you deliver a master for further editing, ProRes is often a safer choice than a compact web codec.
