The Yard

The Yard is a preset for photographs that feel like they were taken somewhere the light gave up trying. The colours are withdrawn, the mood is heavy without being theatrical. Greyed and matte, with a muted orange that does not glow but smoulders, and a tired green that has stopped pushing back. This is what it looks like when the sun barely reaches in.

Technically, the preset pulls down the highlights and keeps the midtones low. There is contrast, but it does not bite. The tone curve flattens out at both ends, so blacks never go fully black and whites never fully arrive. That gives the image its closed, slightly washed-out quality. The colour grading pushes shadows toward green-grey and guides highlights into a subdued orange. Saturation is reduced across the board, especially in blues and yellows. The result is a palette that feels compressed, like a room with no windows and one dim overhead light.

The Yard works well on photographs that already carry some sense of confinement or stillness. Portraits in narrow alleys, waiting rooms, industrial interiors, stairwells, underpasses. Street photography on overcast days or in the shadow of tall buildings. Clothing in muted tones, worn interiors, concrete architecture. The preset struggles with photographs that are naturally bright and open. That is a fight it will not win.

You reach for The Yard when you want a photograph to feel like something is present just out of frame. Not sadness for its own sake, but a quiet that comes from somewhere specific. The reference to The Shawshank Redemption is deliberate: the colour mood of that film is full of held tension, of tiredness that does not give in. That is the register this preset works in.

One practical note: expose your shot slightly brighter than you normally would before applying the preset, especially when shooting RAW. The Yard takes light away, and if your starting point is already dark, shadow detail disappears fast. A third of a stop of extra exposure gives the preset room to work without closing the image down entirely.
