White Coat

White Coat strips out almost all colour. What stays is red, and that red carries everything. The preset draws from the colour mood of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: a cold, clinical world of white and black, with occasional patches of colour that feel like a warning. This is not romantic black and white. It is not warm or filmic. It is something colder and more deliberate.

Technically, the preset works by reducing the saturation of nearly every colour channel, leaving only the reds untouched, sometimes slightly lifted. Whites become genuinely white, without yellow or blue cast. Shadows are deep and dry, with little gradation in between. The contrast is hard, the tone curve steep. Orange, yellow, green, blue, purple: everything shifts to grey. Red alone holds its ground.

The preset is strongest in scenes where red is already present, but only reveals itself fully once everything else disappears. Street photography with red signs, coats, bikes or doors. Portraits of people with red lips, a red item of clothing, or a wound. Architecture shots in hospitals, cafeterias, corridors. Anywhere red tells the story the rest of the frame cannot.

You reach for White Coat when you want a photograph that feels slightly uncomfortable. Not ugly, but clinical. These are images that hold something without explaining it. If you are working on a series about care, systems, institutions or estrangement, this preset fits that feeling. It also works well on individual frames with a strong isolating composition, even outside a longer project.

One practical thing to watch: your white balance. Because the preset pushes orange and yellow tones toward grey, a warm light source can make skin tones unexpectedly flat. Set your white balance a little cooler before applying the preset, or adjust the skin tones separately using the HSL sliders. That gives you more control over what turns grey and what stays red.
