Character and mood

Soap is not a flattering preset. It does not make your photos warmer, more inviting or easier to look at. That is the point. The colour mood is based on Fight Club, a film that looks like it has been sitting in a damp basement for years. Dirty, cold, with that sickly pink appearing where it has no business being. Soap carries that feeling into your own work.

Technically, Soap pulls the shadows down hard without fully crushing them. The blacks are heavy and present. Midtones shift toward a greenish, grimy grey that makes skin look unhealthy and concrete look older than it is. The only warmth left is a desaturated soap pink, visible in highlights and skin tones. That pink does not feel soft. It feels chemical. The overall colour temperature sits on the cold side, and saturation is pulled back on almost every colour except that single pink.

Soap works best in urban environments that were never comfortable to begin with. Street scenes under artificial light, wet pavement after rain, empty parking structures, portrait setups with hard flash or fluorescent tubes. Faces that are not smiling. Figures that look away. Industrial locations, old stairwells and cold interiors also give Soap the space it needs. Bright summer scenes are not what this preset is made for.

You reach for Soap when you want a photo that feels uncomfortable. Not dramatic or overworked, just not pleasant. It fits work about tension, about estrangement, about the city at its ugliest or its most honest. If you are drawn to the aesthetic of nineties thrillers or dark documentary photography, Soap lines up with what you are already looking for.

One practical tip: Soap responds well to portraits shot under artificial light, but watch your exposure. Overexposed skin tones go too pink too quickly and lose the grey undertone that gives the preset its character. Pull your exposure down slightly from where you would normally sit, so the shadows keep their weight.
