Baryta

Baryta is named after the barium sulfate coating that gave darkroom prints their depth. On baryta paper, shadows had weight, highlights had glow, and the midtones carried everything in between with a quiet authority. This preset tries to bring that same quality into Lightroom. Not as a retro effect, but as a standard. Something you would want to print.

Technically, the preset builds contrast through the tone curve rather than a blunt contrast slider. That distinction matters. Shadows become genuinely dark without losing texture in the lower midtones. Highlights are pulled back just enough to stay luminous without blowing out. The deepest shadows carry a faint cool shift, barely noticeable on its own, but it gives the image that silvery metallic quality you see when a real silver gelatin print catches the light at an angle.

The preset works best with photographs that already have clear light and dark separation. Street photography in hard backlight, portraits lit by a single window in a dark room, architecture with strong directional shadows, wet city streets at dusk. It also suits reportage-style images, people in motion, faces with some history in them, quiet scenes with a strong graphic quality. Flat, evenly lit scenes with little contrast will ask more of you, they need the light-dark tension to let the preset do its work.

You reach for Baryta when you want a photograph to feel present. Not soft, not dreamy, not wistful. Clear and direct, with the kind of tonal richness that makes black and white worth choosing in the first place. It is not a loud preset. It does not push drama at you. It simply makes the image look considered.

One practical note: after applying the preset, adjust exposure before you touch anything else. Baryta responds to base exposure more than most. Half a stop in either direction changes how the shadows breathe and whether the highlights feel open or heavy. Get that right first, and the rest of the edit tends to fall into place on its own.
