Character and mood

Emulsion is a black and white preset with a clear point of view. It works the way a physical green filter worked on film: foliage lifts, reds darken, and the image separates in a way that a straight monochrome conversion never quite achieves. Put it on a portrait taken outdoors and the difference is immediate.

What it actually does: the preset adjusts luminance values per colour channel. Greens and yellow-greens are brightened, reds and oranges are pulled down. Leaves and grass gain brightness and texture. Lips, warm skin tones, and anything with red in it moves toward dark. The contrast that results is not just a matter of the global tone curve. It comes from the relationship between colours that are now separated into distinct tones. That gives the photo a different kind of depth.

Emulsion works best when green and red or orange sit close together in the frame. Portraits in a garden, a park, or under trees in spring or summer. Street photographs where people move through leafy surroundings. Nature and landscape images benefit as well: grass and foliage pick up structure and presence, while skies tend to stay neutral or shift slightly darker if there is blue in them.

You reach for Emulsion when a standard black and white conversion feels flat. When you have a face in front of a green background and want the two to actually separate. When you want an image that feels considered and a little classical without looking like it is trying too hard to be vintage.

One practical note: the preset works on the underlying colour data, so apply it to a RAW file or an unedited colour JPEG before you do anything else. If the skin comes out too dark for your taste, nudge the red luminance slider up a little. You keep the separation in the greens while recovering the detail you want in the face.
