Carousel captures a very specific kind of light. The kind you find at fairgrounds after sunset, where incandescent bulbs string across the air and colours seem a little more saturated than they should be. The preset feels warm, lively, and slightly nostalgic without leaning into vintage clichés. It has a clear character, but it stays in the background and lets the photo speak.

Technically, Carousel lifts the shadows and gently pulls back the highlights, which creates a softer distribution of exposure across the frame. The white balance shifts toward warm without pushing skin tones into orange territory. Reds, yellows, and oranges gain saturation and luminosity, while cooler tones like blue and green are kept a little quieter. Contrast is present but not harsh. The tone curve runs a soft S-shape that keeps the midtones open and readable.

The preset performs best with artificial light: fairgrounds, night markets, street festivals, portraits taken under warm street lamps, lit shop windows, cafés and bars with tungsten or Edison-style lighting. It also works well during golden hour with strong directional sunlight or in interiors with a lot of wood and warm ambient light. In flat daylight or scenes without obvious colour accents, it has less to work with and another preset will likely suit better.

Choose Carousel when a photo has energy, warmth, or a sense of occasion. When you want the image to feel like something worth remembering rather than simply recording. It fits street photography with festive or urban nightlife context, and portrait work where the environment carries as much mood as the subject. The retro quality comes from the colour treatment, not from any added grain or fading, so the result stays clean.

One practical tip: Carousel is calibrated for RAW files at a standard exposure. If you are working with a slightly underexposed frame shot in low fairground light, bring the exposure up by 0.3 to 0.7 stops before applying the preset. This gives the shadow recovery and colour treatment the baseline they need to work as intended, and keeps the warm highlights from clipping.
