Character and mood

Lantern is a preset built around warmth that feels earned. The name points directly at its character: orange and red lanterns glowing in the twilight, that specific quality of light just after sunset when artificial sources take over from the sky. This preset carries that same feeling into your photos. Not oversaturated, not aggressively warm, just the kind of glow that makes a scene feel alive at dusk.

On a technical level, Lantern pushes the shadows slightly cool, which makes the warm midtones and highlights feel richer by contrast. Contrast is raised just enough to give the image depth without crushing detail in the darker areas. The orange and red channels in the HSL panel are lifted, and yellow light shifts gently toward orange. The result is a color palette that reads as twilight, without making the photo look filtered or artificially treated.

This preset works best on images that already carry a warm light source. Street photography shot under evening light, lanterns, neon signs, storefronts at dusk, portraits taken in warm interior light, night markets, outdoor festivals after sunset. It also performs well during golden hour, strengthening what is already present in the light rather than manufacturing something that was never there. Scenes with cool or neutral light are less suited for this preset, unless you are deliberately working with that tension between warm and cold.

Lantern is the right choice when you want a photo to feel like a city evening, lights just switched on, sky still holding a little color. When you want to capture that in-between moment where daylight and artificial light overlap, this preset matches that mood directly. It also works well when you need a series of photos to feel consistent, a festival reportage, a documentary series shot over one evening, a portfolio of urban night scenes.

One practical note: Lantern is calibrated for correctly exposed RAW files. If your shot is underexposed, bring the exposure up before applying the preset. That way you keep control over the shadow detail and the preset has the right tonal range to work with.
