35mm Film

The wedding and portrait photographer's film of choice. Cool, soft, pastel-like — slightly overexposing always works. Discontinued in 2021, and thousands of photographers have mourned it since. Inspired by the colour characteristics of Fuji Pro 400H. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Fujifilm.

Character and mood

Fuji Pro 400H was the film that wedding and portrait photographers reached for without thinking twice. Cool highlights, soft contrast, skin tones that looked flattering in almost any light. When Fujifilm discontinued it in 2021, a lot of photographers felt the loss more than they expected. This preset is based on those colour characteristics. Not a pixel-perfect replica, but a genuine translation for digital files. If you know the film, you'll recognise the feeling.

The preset shifts whites and highlights toward a cool blue-green. Shadows stay soft rather than deep. Overall contrast is kept low to moderate, giving the image a gentle flatness that reads as quiet and considered. Colours are toned down rather than pushed: no extra saturation, no artificial vibrancy. Skin tones land in a warm pink-beige range with a slight cool cast on top. That specific combination is what made the film feel so natural on people.

This preset works best with portraits in natural light. Outdoor portraits on overcast days, indoor lifestyle sessions with window light, or softly lit studio work all respond well. Open shade outdoors is another good fit. One thing to keep in mind: the preset needs breathing room in the highlights. If your exposure is already clipping, the soft tonal quality disappears. High-contrast scenes with deep shadows are less suited for this look.

You reach for this preset when a photo needs to feel soft, a little timeless, and easy on the eye. Not when you want bold colours or graphic contrast. Wedding photographers working in a film-inspired style will find something familiar here. The same goes for lifestyle and family photography where the colour palette should support the people in the frame, not compete with them.

A practical tip: try exposing a little brighter than you normally would. Half a stop to a full stop of overexposure gives the preset more to work with, and the highlights stay soft in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental. If you prefer shooting at your usual exposure, you can add 0.3 to 0.7 stops in Lightroom after applying the preset. It takes a few seconds and makes a noticeable difference.
