Character and mood
HP5 is not a tidy film. That is exactly why it works so well. Ilford made it for photographers who do not wait for perfect light, who shoot when the moment is there, and who prefer a photo raw over polished. This preset does the same. It pulls the British character from the original film material: honest, direct, with a slightly grey tone that does not win any beauty contest but does make a photo feel real.
What the preset does to your photo is subtle but noticeable. The midtones gain a slight density, as if a thin veil lies across the image, the way exposed film grain does too. The highlights stay open, they do not blow out but hold detail. The shadows are dark without closing off completely. The contrast sits in the midtones, not in the extremes. That creates a sense of depth without drama. The gradation runs smoothly from light to dark, just like on the actual film.
The preset works best in situations with uneven light. Street photography during the day, where sun and shadow run together. Concert venues with hard spots and deep shadows. Portraits by window or artificial light, where the exposure is not perfectly balanced. That is exactly where HP5 shows its character: it does not fall apart, it absorbs the situation. Even at high ISO values the preset stays functional, the grain structure fits with digital noise rather than working against it.
You choose this preset when you want a photo to feel like a moment, not a production. When you care more about mood than technical precision. HP5 is not a preset for photographers who want to control everything. It is for photographers who let the situation in and see what is there afterwards.
One practical tip: expose your photo a third of a stop lower than you normally would before applying the preset. HP5 works better with a little more density in the midtones. Then bring the exposure up inside the preset using the exposure slider, and see if the shadows open slightly. That gives you the film-like transition from dark to light that defines the character of this preset.
Installation
Lightroom Classic & CC (desktop)
Unzip the downloaded file on your computer. Open Lightroom Classic and go to the Develop module. Right-click the Presets panel, choose 'Import Presets', and select the .xmp file. The preset appears in your list immediately and can be applied to any photo straight away.
Lightroom Mobile
Lightroom Mobile syncs presets via the cloud. Import the .xmp file into Lightroom CC on your desktop first. Once cloud sync completes, the preset is automatically available on your phone or tablet. An Adobe CC subscription is required for this sync feature.
Capture One
Unzip the file. Open Capture One and navigate to the Styles panel. Click the arrow next to 'Styles' and choose 'Import Style'. Select the .costyle file. The style is available in your library immediately. Works with Capture One version 21 and later.
DaVinci Resolve / Premiere Pro (3D LUT)
Copy the .cube file to your application's LUT folder. In DaVinci Resolve via Project Settings → Color Management → LUT folders. In Premiere Pro via the Lumetri Color panel → Creative tab → Look → Browse. The LUT works on both LOG and standard exposed video footage.
