35mm Film

Fujifilm's legendary black and white film. Cooler than Ilford, extremely fine grain and sharp midtones. Japanese precision: nothing too much, nothing too little. Where HP5 gives feeling, Acros gives structure. Inspired by the characteristics of Fuji Neopan Acros. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Fujifilm.

Character and mood

Neopan Acros is not a film you notice because of mood. You notice it because of clarity. Where other black and white films add warmth or grain as a kind of atmosphere, Acros is more precise. Quieter. The lines hold, the greys sit exactly where they belong. This is the preset for photographs that speak for themselves.

Technically, the preset works with cool tones in the shadows and tight midtones that hold slightly more contrast than you would expect from a standard black and white conversion. The grain is there, but fine. Not as texture that draws attention, but as evidence that you are looking at a real frame. Highlights do not blow out. Dark areas keep detail. Acros gets the most out of photographs with a clear tonal range, where light and shadow already play a role before the preset does anything with them.

The preset works well with architecture, street photography and portraits in hard light. Scenes with straight lines, window frames, shadows on walls, or a face that is partly caught in direct light. It also suits reportage photography where you want a calm, neutral tone without the image feeling cold or clinical. Acros keeps just enough life in skin tones to make portraits workable, though for warm, soft portraits it is less obvious a choice than a preset based on HP5.

You choose Acros when you want the form of a photograph to do the work. Not the atmosphere, not the mood, but the composition itself. It is a preset that takes photography seriously without adding anything on top of it. If you look at an image and think: everything is already here, I do not want to put anything over it, then this is the processing that fits.

A practical tip: apply the preset and then lower the exposure by half to one full stop if the scene contains a lot of midday light or large bright areas. Acros reads light slightly differently from warmer presets. The shadows can afford to go deeper. That is where the structure comes from.
