Character and mood

Neon rain puts your photo somewhere that feels like three in the morning in Shinjuku, right after the rain has stopped. The colours are saturated but not garish. Light sits heavy and warm in the puddles on the street. There is something melancholic in it, something that pulls. This is not a filter that brightens your photo. It is a mood that draws the viewer in.

Technically, the preset works by raising colour saturation in the red, purple and cyan ranges, exactly the tones that neon lighting produces. Shadows are lifted slightly and carry a cool undertone, while highlights stay warm. That tension between warm light and cool darkness creates depth without you having to push the contrast slider yourself. The curve is a soft S-shape, keeping detail visible in the darker areas of the frame. Noise is left alone, because grain belongs in images like these.

The preset works best with night photography and blue-hour shots in urban environments. Think wet cobblestones, shop windows, reflections in puddles, people passing under streetlights or illuminated signs. Portraits taken in artificial city light also respond well: the preset handles skin tones naturally as long as the ambient light already carries some warmth or colour. It has nothing to offer black and white images and was not made for them.

You reach for Neon rain when you have a shot that already holds the atmosphere but not yet the colour. A little rain, some neon nearby, a street with life in it. That photo does not need a heavy edit, just the right tone. That is exactly what this preset delivers. It also works well as a starting point for a series: a consistent look across several night images gives a sequence cohesion without every photo feeling identical.

A practical tip: apply the preset and then pull saturation down by five to ten points if the colours feel too forward. Sometimes a little restraint works better, depending on how much neon light was already in the original scene. Use the HSL slider for cyan to control the tone of wet pavement. It makes a real difference in how vivid the reflections read.
