Poetry

Attached and full of wonder. Like a biologist looking at life. Soft blue-green, watercolour-like, tender. Leo Vroman was a biologist and a poet who looked at the world with wonder. This preset is for photographs that do the same. Inspired by the atmosphere of Leo Vroman's work. Not affiliated with or endorsed by his estate.

Character and mood

Wonder is a preset for photographs that pause. Not dramatic, not loud. Just present. The colours are soft blue-green, lightly watercolour-like, as if the image has just dried on paper. The mood is tender. You look at something ordinary and suddenly see how remarkable it is.

Technically, Wonder reduces contrast slightly, keeping shadows more open and preventing highlights from dominating. The white balance shifts subtly toward cooler territory, into blue-green midtones. Saturation is held back, but not removed: colour is still there, it just does not shout. The tone curve has a gentle lift at the lower end, giving dark tones a little more air without turning them grey. The overall result feels quieter than your RAW file, but no less sharp.

This preset works well on portraits in daylight, preferably overcast or indirect. Street photographs taken in the morning or late afternoon, with soft shadows. Close-up nature: a leaf, an insect, a handful of soil. People at rest, not in motion. Scenes where you notice something others walk past. The preset struggles with hard midday sun and scenes with heavily saturated colours. In those situations it loses its character.

You reach for Wonder when a photograph has something quiet to say. When feeling matters more than technique. Leo Vroman was a biologist and a poet who looked at life with equal attention whether he was describing a blood cell or a kiss. That double gaze, that sense of attachment, is what this preset tries to translate into colour and light. Not every image calls for it. But some do.

A practical tip: adjust the exposure slider before applying Wonder, not after. The preset is built around a neutral exposure. Half a stop too dark and the soft shadows become heavy. Half a stop too bright and the watercolour quality disappears. Take a moment for that one adjustment, and everything else tends to fall into place on its own.
