Pastel

Pastel is a preset that breathes. The light feels like it comes from within the image, as if the timing was just right when you pressed the shutter. No drama, no heavy shadows. Just a calm, airy atmosphere that gives your photo room to exist.

Technically, Pastel lifts the shadows gently and pulls down the contrast, without the image losing its sense of depth. Highlights stay soft and open. What sets Pastel apart from other light presets is what happens to skin: it keeps its golden warmth. No yellow cast, no washed-out tones. Colors do not disappear, they settle. Greens become quieter, blues shift slightly cooler, but everything holds together in a way that reads as natural.

Pastel works best in situations with plenty of light or light-toned backgrounds. Portraits in daylight, near a window, or in open shade on a sunny day are a natural fit. Street photos with pale walls, concrete surfaces, or an overcast sky respond well to this treatment. Fashion and lifestyle images shot on location, especially when clothing and surroundings are in lighter tones, also come through cleanly. The preset does not do much with dark or heavily shadowed scenes, and it is not meant to. That is simply not its territory.

You reach for Pastel when you want an image that feels soft without feeling fragile. When you want to move away from the sense that a photo has been pushed too hard in post, but still want a recognizable look. Pastel gives your images a consistent feel that holds up on social media, in print, and in a portfolio. It is a good choice when you want a series of images to belong together without looking like copies of each other.

A practical tip: start with the preset at 100% and look at the skin first. If it reads too bright or too warm, adjust the white balance in the basic panel before touching anything else. The preset is built around a neutral to slightly warm white balance. If your source files are on the cooler side, Pastel will feel flatter than intended. A small nudge to the right on the temperature slider usually makes a noticeable difference.
