Character and mood

Matte Film gives your photos something held back. The blacks don't push deep, the colours don't compete. There's a quiet veil over the image, as if it was made a while ago and has settled. That's the point. This preset works from stillness, not from drama.

Technically, Matte Film lifts the shadows slightly, which causes the blacks to lose some of their depth and shift into a faded, grayish dark. The highlights cool a little. The shadows keep a warmer undertone. That temperature difference between light and dark creates a subtle tension without announcing itself. Colours are muted, saturation pulled back, but not so far that the image feels monochrome. Grain is present, almost audible, without being heavy. It reads as analogue without becoming a costume.

The preset works well on portraits in shaded environments, street scenes on overcast days, and images with a lot of neutral tones such as concrete, asphalt or dark clothing. Scenes with strong direct sunlight can go flat, unless that's what you're after. Interiors with soft window light respond well. Documentary photographs, made in unlit and unstyled locations, also find a quiet coherence with Matte Film.

You reach for Matte Film when you want a series of photographs to feel connected without looking identical. The preset is restrained enough to stay out of the way, but consistent enough to build a style. It suits photographers who don't want post-processing to be the first thing someone notices. If you want your portrait work or street photography to carry a filmic quality without leaning hard into colour grading, this is a solid place to start.

After applying the preset, try nudging exposure up by half a stop. Matte Film tends to render slightly darker than you might expect at first. A small compensation keeps shadow detail visible without losing the fade. Once you've done that, adjust white balance if the warmth in the shadows reads too strong or too weak for your specific scene.
