Portrait

High contrast, warm and glamorous. George Hurrell photographed Joan Crawford and Clark Gable this way. The portrait nobody forgets. Extra powerful on medium to dark skin tones — the high contrast accentuates bone structure and gives the skin depth.

Character and mood

Vintage Hollywood brings the glamour of classic Hollywood studio photography into your own work. Think of the portraits George Hurrell made in the 1930s and 1940s: heavy contrast, warm shadows, a luminosity that makes skin look almost touchable. That feeling is built into this preset. Not as a nostalgic trick, but as a style that holds up across decades.

The preset raises contrast significantly and warms the midtones. Highlights stay present but are pulled back just enough to glow without clipping. Shadows deepen and take on a warm, slightly brown tone that recalls older photographic processes. Skin tones become richer and warmer throughout. The result is a photo that feels older than it is, but never messy or degraded. It looks deliberate. Because it is.

This preset works best on portrait photography. On medium to dark skin tones in particular, it does exactly what it promises: the high contrast accentuates bone structure and gives the skin a depth that flat or neutral edits rarely achieve. On lighter skin tones, it still delivers, provided the light is hard enough. Beyond portraits, Vintage Hollywood also works well on street scenes with strong directional light and sharp shadows, or on architecture with a historical character.

You reach for this preset when you want a photo that stands out without shouting. Not through effects, but through weight and presence. It fits a wedding shoot where you want to amplify the romance. A portrait commission where the client expects something timeless. Or simply a frame where the light already has that quality and the edit needs to match it.

One practical tip: start with the preset opacity around 80% and work up from there. On images with a lot of ambient fill light, full 100% opacity can make the contrast feel too heavy. Dialing it back keeps the glamour intact while giving the photo room to breathe. Also think about your light source when shooting: a hard light from the side, like a window or a bare strobe, lets this preset render at its best.
