Skating – Ice Rink Blue

Ice Rink Blue does exactly what the name suggests. Cold blue light bouncing off freshly resurfaced ice, that particular glow of an indoor rink that feels both sharp and fragile. This preset captures the atmosphere of speed and stillness together, and translates it into a colour palette that places your photos somewhere specific.

Technically, the preset works by cooling the highlights and shifting the white balance toward blue and cyan. Shadows gain depth without becoming heavy. Midtones stay readable but carry the cool undertone throughout. The contrast is controlled, enough to make the ice surface shimmer without losing detail in the darker edges of the rink. The colour curves pull back warm tones and lift cool ones, so the feel of an artificially lit indoor space actually holds up.

This preset works best with ice hockey, figure skating and speed skating, but it also suits portraits made on or around a rink. Skaters in motion, ice reflections caught from a low angle, light falling through the stands onto a single skater standing still. Other indoor sports with cool artificial lighting can work too, though the preset was built with ice in mind.

You reach for this preset when you want the atmosphere of a rink to survive the edit. A lot of indoor sports photography gets corrected toward something warmer and more neutral in post. But an ice rink is not warm or neutral, and flattening that out loses something real. This preset keeps the environment honest and pushes it a little further in the right direction.

One practical tip: if your shots are already on the bright side, pull the exposure down slightly before applying the preset. Ice reflects a lot of light, especially on a freshly cleaned surface. Somewhere between minus 0.3 and minus 0.5 gives your shadows more weight and lets the blue light settle properly. From there, bring the highlights back a touch if you want to recover surface detail in the ice itself.
