The City

Warm amber-red at sunset, deep purple shadows, the Bosphorus glowing. Istanbul is the only city in the world that stands on two continents — and you feel it in the light. East and west in one frame, minaret silhouette against orange sky.

Character and mood

Istanbul is not a preset for clean, cool images. It carries warmth, depth, and the specific glow you only find in cities where centuries have walked the same streets. Amber in the highlights, purple in the shadows, and a tension in between that gives your photo something hard to put into words. This is the colour of a city that is never just one thing.

Technically, Istanbul shifts the white balance toward warm orange without blowing out the highlights. The shadows pick up a purple-blue tint that adds depth without swallowing detail. Contrast sits at a medium level, enough to bring out texture in stone, fabric and brick, but not so heavy that faces suffer. The tone curve rises gradually, with a slight lift in the deepest blacks. That gives the image a muted quality, as if the light is falling through thin air.

This preset works best on golden hour shots in urban environments. Think narrow alleys with backlight, markets lit by lanterns, people pausing at a stall or leaning in a doorway. Silhouettes land well because of the high contrast between warm sky and dark shapes. Portraits in indirect evening light take on skin tones that feel closer to a painting than a photograph. Architecture, especially towers, domes and bridges, benefits from the dramatic shadow colour.

You reach for Istanbul when you want a photo that feels like it stands on the edge of two worlds. Not just geographically, but in time. For travel photography that goes beyond the postcard. For street photos where mood matters more than technical precision. And for evening shots where available light is scarce but still carries colour.

One practical tip: after applying the preset, lower exposure by half a stop to one stop if you shot in bright midday sun. Istanbul is built for low to normal light. In heavy ambient light the highlights can push too yellow too quickly. Shooting in RAW gives you enough room in the sliders to dial it in exactly the way you want.
