Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a preset for photographers who value restraint. Cool and clear like a November morning, but never cold. The warm wood accents in the midtones keep images livable. You think of yellow facades reflected in dark canal water, of cobblestones casting shadows with a hint of blue or purple. That combination, the crisp and the warm existing at the same time, is what gives this preset its character.

Technically, Copenhagen brings the blue-green tones forward in the highlights and shadows without letting them dominate. The contrast is present but not heavy. Midtones pick up a gentle warmth through shifts in the orange and yellow hue ranges, giving skin and wood an earthy, direct quality. Shadows stay open. You do not lose detail in dark corners, because the preset works through colour and tone rather than through black. Highlights are pulled back just enough to give an overcast sky some texture without turning dramatic.

The preset works best with street photography in diffuse or low-angled light. Overcast city days in autumn or winter, early morning light on empty streets, the golden hour that in northern latitudes tends toward blue rather than orange. Portraits in outdoor light also do well, especially when the background contains architecture or stone. Interiors with wood and concrete, markets, harbours, transit spaces, places where people live without posing.

You reach for Copenhagen when you want a photo that feels right without the viewer knowing exactly why. Not processed, but not raw either. The preset suits reportages and series where the tone needs to stay consistent, as well as single images you want to present without further adjustments. If the light in your photo already carries something of Scandinavian plainness, this preset strengthens that. If it does not, the preset brings a quiet version of it along.

A practical note: if your photos were shot under warm artificial light, shift the white balance a few hundred Kelvin downward before applying the preset. Copenhagen performs better from a neutral starting point than from a warmed-up image. One small adjustment, and the preset handles the rest.
