Character and mood
The Alpe d'Huez preset captures the atmosphere of a summer mountain stage in the Tour de France. Not the polished look of a press kit, but the feeling of the road itself: the heat, the dust, the spectators standing inches away from the riders. This preset brings that into your photos. Warm, but not overdone. Strong, but with room for detail.
Technically, the preset lifts the midtones slightly, opening up shadows without losing their texture. Highlights are pulled back gently, so a white jersey or a bright sponsor banner does not burn out. The contrast is present and deliberate, but it lives in the midtones rather than at the extremes. Colors shift toward warm yellows and lightly saturated ochres, while cooler tones in the sky are softened. The result is an image that feels like a busy July afternoon on a French mountain road.
The preset works best on cycling images shot in direct sunlight or hard midday light, but it also suits atmosphere shots from the roadside. Spectators in colorful clothing, groups of riders in a peloton, close-ups of faces showing effort, or an overview of a hairpin bend packed with crowds. Road shots where the climb itself takes center stage also benefit from the warm tone and the subdued blue in the sky.
Choose this preset when you want to bring back the feeling of a major cycling race. Not only for photos from the Alpe d'Huez itself, but for any cycling image where warmth, energy and a slight cinematic quality fit naturally. The preset also works for other mountain sports or outdoor events with a lot of color and movement.
A practical tip: adjust the exposure per photo after applying the preset. It is built around an average exposure, but cycling photography often comes with hard light and deep shadows. Pull the highlights slider down further if the sky stays too bright, and use the shadows slider to keep faces readable under a cap or helmet. That way you get the most out of each frame, whatever the light was doing that day.
