Fine grain

Fine grain does not try to be noticed. The texture is there, but it stays quiet. You only spot it when you look closely, and by then you understand why it had to be there. This is the preset for photos that feel like film without the theatrics that usually come with it. No heavy texture, no retro aesthetic, no filter announcing itself. Just an image that makes sense.

The preset adjusts contrast in a measured way, adding a little more depth in the shadows without closing them off. Highlights stay open and breathable. The colour temperature leans slightly warm, but not enough to shift the mood. The grain itself is fine and even, the way Acros looks at 100 ASA in good light: organic, not applied. The result is an image with presence. Not clinical, not flat, but tuned just right.

The preset works best with photos that have clear light and room to breathe. Portraits in natural light, street photos on overcast days, indoor reportage where the light is soft and comes from one direction. Scenes with detail, texture in clothing or skin, stonework, water, worn objects. Anything where you want the photo to feel like something you could hold in your hands.

You reach for Fine grain when a photo is almost there but still missing something tangible. Digital can feel like glass: sharp, but cold. This preset adds a layer you cannot name but immediately sense. It will not rescue a poorly exposed frame, but it completes a well-made one.

One practical tip: apply the preset first, then adjust exposure afterwards. Grain behaves differently on an overexposed file than on a correctly exposed one. Get your base exposure right in Lightroom before adding the preset, and if the grain feels slightly too present for your image, pull it back gently using the grain slider in the Effects panel. That way the character stays intact and the result stays yours.
