Full range

Some presets want to make a statement. Full Range does not. It has no signature, no colour preference, no dramatic point of view. It brings a photo back to what it should be: clear in the highlights, deep in the shadows, and everything in between sitting right where it belongs. Nothing more. That is exactly what makes it useful.

Technically, Full Range optimises the tonal range of your photo without upsetting its balance. The deepest blacks stay full without blocking up. The brightest whites hold detail. Midtones are not pushed toward any particular mood, they remain neutral and readable. There is no colour shift, no added warmth or coolness, no contrast forcing its opinion on the image. What you get is a photo that works on a technical level.

That makes this preset particularly well suited to situations where the subject carries the image by itself. Street photography with heavy light contrast, portraits in natural light, architecture, documentary work. Reportage series where consistency matters more than atmosphere also benefit from this approach. The preset goes unnoticed, so the content of the photo can do the talking.

You reach for Full Range when you want a dependable starting point. Not as a finished result, but as a foundation. Sometimes that is enough, and the photo stays exactly as it is. More often you use it as a first step, before layering a second preset on top or making manual adjustments. It clears away the flat, unprocessed look that a Raw file arrives with, without deciding what the final image should become.

A practical tip: pair Full Range with the adjustment brush in Lightroom. Apply the preset to the whole photo as a base, then add local adjustments to specific areas, a face, a background, a light source. Because the overall tonal distribution is already balanced, local corrections respond more precisely and look more natural. You work faster, and the result feels calmer.
