Lift, Gamma, Gain

Lift, Gamma and Gain are the three main controls of your image: Lift for shadows, Gamma for midtones and Gain for highlights. With these three you set both brightness and color per tonal range. They're the heart of almost every color correction.

In DaVinci Resolve they sit under the first three color wheels, in Premiere Pro you find them in the Lumetri panel under Color Wheels. Move the wheel to color that tonal range, turn the ring below it to adjust brightness. Tip: work with your waveform alongside so you keep shadows and highlights neatly in range. A small nudge often does more than you'd expect.
