Local contrast

Local contrast is the contrast between neighboring areas in your photo, rather than between the lightest and darkest point of the whole image. Sliders like clarity, texture and dehaze all control a form of local contrast. It gives depth and pop without weighing down the global tone.

If you want a photo to look more three-dimensional, local contrast is often the answer, not the global contrast slider. A touch of clarity lifts the midtones around edges, while texture handles the finest details. Use it selectively with a mask on mountains or clouds, for example, so you leave skin alone. Too much local contrast gives a hard, HDR-like effect, so apply it with feel.
