Transcode
Transcoding is converting your video files to another codec or format, for example to edit more smoothly. Unlike a final export you usually do this beforehand or in between, as a technical intermediate step. It makes heavy footage workable or suitable for another program.
If your edit stutters with heavy H.265 or RAW files, you transcode them to an edit-friendly codec like ProRes. In DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro (via Media Encoder) and Final Cut Pro you do this with your import or optimize options. It resembles proxies, but with transcoding you genuinely replace your working files instead of placing a light shadow copy alongside. Tip: transcode to a generous, high-quality codec, so you keep enough quality to grade.
