Crafts

For timber, water and salt. Weathered and matte with deep navy, sea green and a warm teak between them. Adventurous and a touch faded, as if a sea breeze passed over it.

Character and mood

Boatyard smells of tar and salt. The preset draws out what is already there: the tiredness of paint layers that have been fighting the wind for years, the green of algae on old iron, the warm timber of a deck that has been soaked a thousand times over. It is not a nostalgic filter. It is a mood that suits places where people work, where boats are built and repaired and sent back out to sea.

Technically, Boatyard works from the outside in. Highlights are pulled back so that sky and water retain texture. Shadows open slightly, but stay heavy enough to add depth. The colour grading pushes cool tones toward navy and sea green, while warm midtones shift toward teak, a brownish amber that flatters timber and rust. The contrast is present but not hard. The result is matte and lightly subdued, as if the sky was overcast when you took the shot, even when it was not.

The preset works best with subjects that have texture and patina. Weathered wooden hulls, rusted chains, wet quaysides, fishing boats with peeling paint. But it also suits street photography near water, harbour towns, industrial waterfronts, and portraits of people who work outdoors. The sea green and navy combination gives ordinary blue-grey tones a sense of character, without the image looking processed.

You reach for Boatyard when a photo already has a rougher feel, or when you want to push it in that direction. It is less suited to soft, warm sunlight or interiors without hard edges. But give it an overcast sky, wet concrete or aged timber, and it settles into the image like it was always meant to be there.

A practical tip: lower your exposure slightly before applying the preset. Boatyard is built for images that sit a little on the darker side. Overexposed starting points eat into the deep tones in the blues and greens, and that is exactly where the preset finds its character.
