Safelight is a black and white preset with the quiet confidence of analogue work. No heavy-handed contrast, no forced atmosphere. Just a clean, classic tonality that gives your photo room to breathe. The name references the red light of the darkroom, but the preset itself works with a simulated yellow filter. That gives it a sense of familiarity, something that feels like it has always existed.

The yellow filter is what sets this preset apart technically. Yellow absorbs blue light, which means a blue sky becomes slightly deeper and heavier in the final conversion. Not dramatic, not overblown, but noticeably present. At the same time, the filter treats red and orange tones gently. Skin does not go dark or harsh. It stays light and open. The contrast in the midtones is built up carefully, with soft shadows that hold detail. The result is a black and white that does not shout, but pulls you in.

The preset works well for portraits on location, daytime street photography, and scenes with a partly cloudy sky. One practical tip: after applying the preset, adjust the exposure before you touch contrast or clarity. Safelight favours well-exposed originals. Underexposed files can go a little flat in the shadows. Expose slightly more generously than usual and you get exactly those soft, open midtones the preset is built around.
