35mm Film

The film of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus and Sebastião Salgado. Coarse grain, high contrast, raw and unforgiving. Tri-X has no interest in pretty weather. Inspired by the characteristics of Kodak Tri-X 400. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Kodak.

Character and mood

Tri-X does not make your photos easier to look at. The grain is coarse, the contrast is high, and the shadows drop away like it is the middle of the night. This is the film Henri Cartier-Bresson carried through the streets of Paris, the film Diane Arbus used to photograph people no one else wanted to see, the film Sebastião Salgado reached for when he documented labor and grief in ways that stay with you. Tri-X has character that does not apologize.

Technically, the preset pulls the exposure back slightly and pushes contrast hard. Highlights are kept in check so they do not blow out, but the midtones and shadows take on a heavy, graphic weight. Color disappears entirely: Tri-X converts to black and white with a toning that sits cooler than neutral, leaning toward blue-gray. The grain is clearly visible, even on smaller screens or prints. Not as a filter effect, but as a structural part of the image.

The preset works best on photographs that already have strong contrast, deep shadows, or direct light. Street photography on overcast days, industrial environments, portraits lit without flattery. People who are working, waiting, moving through a frame. Scenes that carry their own weight. Tri-X has nothing to offer soft pastels or golden-hour warmth. If that is what you are looking for, a different preset will serve you better.

You reach for Tri-X when you want a photograph that holds up without context. When the content of the image does the work and the edit simply backs it up. The preset also asks something of you: it will not fill in what is not there. What is there, it will make hit harder.

One practical note: shoot slightly brighter than usual before applying this preset, or lift your exposure in Lightroom before you load it. Tri-X pulls light down, and if your starting point is already on the dark side your shadows will close off completely. Half a stop to a full stop of extra exposure at capture, or a small pre-correction in the develop module, gives you room to work with the final result.
