Chalk cliff

Chalk Cliff gives your photos the brightness of an overcast day on the coast. Not flat, not overexposed, but clear with character. The chalk white in the highlights breathes calm, while the cool blue shadows add depth without swallowing detail. The result is an image you recognize immediately: clean, light, with a slight coolness that never turns cold.

Technically, Chalk Cliff lifts the highlights without letting them blow out. The white point is set deliberately high, but texture in bright tones is preserved. The shadows receive a cool blue-green shift, subtle enough to stay invisible as a filter, strong enough to give structure to dark areas. Contrast is not increased through a simple curve, but through tonal distribution: midtones stay relatively neutral, so faces and surfaces keep their shape. Color saturation is pulled back across the board, except for blue and cyan, which are gently strengthened.

This preset works best on images with a lot of light or a lot of white elements. Think street photography on overcast days, architecture with concrete or stone, portraits in soft natural light, and landscapes with an open sky. Photos that would otherwise work in black and white also benefit from the restrained color tone of Chalk Cliff. Scenes with warm, saturated colors, such as golden-hour light or autumn foliage, are less suited. In those cases, the cool tone works against the existing light rather than with it.

You reach for Chalk Cliff when you want a photo that feels light without becoming sweet. When you want to strip back the noise of a busy street and focus on the essential, or when a portrait needs calm rather than warmth. The preset also works well for series: because of the consistent treatment of light, a set of photos feels cohesive even when they were taken at different times.

A practical tip: reduce exposure by 0.3 to 0.5 stops before applying Chalk Cliff to photos taken in bright direct sun. The preset is calibrated for diffused light. In direct sunlight, the highlights can saturate too quickly, and you lose exactly the texture that Chalk Cliff is designed to hold.
