Character and mood

Linen Blue is a preset for photographs that need to be quiet. Not muted in a dull way, but calm on purpose. The colour palette sits in a range of cool blue-grey and soft white, like light filtered through an unbleached linen curtain. It does not shout. It settles. If you want a photo to hold a viewer's attention without demanding it, this is where you start.

The preset pulls highlights down slightly and lifts the shadows just enough to keep the contrast from feeling heavy. Whites gain a faint warm undertone, which is what gives it the linen quality rather than a flat grey. Blues and cyans are desaturated gently, staying recognisable but softer. The tone curve breathes instead of biting. You end up with an image that feels measured, like someone thought carefully about every part of the frame.

Minimalist interiors are a natural fit. A plastered wall, a ceramic object, a window with diffused light outside. Concrete and stone architecture in overcast conditions work well too. Still water, bare trees, a fog-covered street in early morning. For portraits, Linen Blue holds up best in soft ambient light where the skin is not overly warm. It pushes the background and surroundings into a quiet register while keeping the face readable.

You reach for Linen Blue when a series of photographs needs to feel like one thing. For a portfolio that has a consistent tone. Or for a single image you do not want to colour-grade heavily, but still want to give some character. It also works well as a starting point for near-monochrome edits where you want more than grey but less than full colour.

One practical tip: Linen Blue responds well to a slight underexposure. Before applying the preset, bring your exposure down by a third to half a stop. This gives the shadows room to open up naturally without the image becoming flat or closed. The result tends to feel more intentional than corrected.
