Character and mood

April smells like wet soil and fresh leaves. The preset captures that feeling: light that is not yet harsh, colours that breathe, an atmosphere as if the day has only just started. Pastel green and soft pink dominate the palette, not loud but present. It is the tone of a morning in April, exactly as you know it.

Technically, April pulls back the highlights without losing warmth. Shadows stay open, light but not empty. Contrast is there, enough to give structure to leaves, blossom or skin, but never so hard that it breaks the softness of the season. The white balance leans slightly cool, which reinforces the freshness. Greens take on a pastel quality, pink tones in blossom or clothing brighten up without becoming garish. The result is coherent and calm.

April works best on images that already carry something gentle in them. Think of blossom branches in backlight, outdoor portraits in overcast or filtered sunlight, street scenes on an early morning with little activity and a lot of open sky. Lifestyle photography benefits too: a cup of coffee by a window, hands around a book, a child in a garden. Wherever reality already has a slightly dreamy quality, April strengthens that feeling without pushing it too far.

You reach for April when you want to give a series of photos a recognisable spring mood, for a portfolio, a wedding session in the park, or a set you want to post online. The preset brings unity to images that differ slightly in exposure, because the colour tone is clear enough to make small inconsistencies disappear. And if you have just one image that calls for something light and seasonal, it works straight away.

One practical tip: if your photo contains a lot of blue in the sky or in the shadows, the slightly cool white balance can feel a touch too blue. In that case, open the HSL panel, find the blue slider and pull the saturation back a step. It takes two seconds, and the image falls exactly into place.
