Four Seasons

The first crocuses break through the ground, bringing violet and white into an otherwise grey world. Tentative colour after the long winter — not fresh like spring, but hopeful. The darkness loosening its grip.

Character and mood

February is not a cheerful preset. It is not a gloomy one either. It captures something more specific: that feeling of a day in February when the sun sits low, the sky is white, and somewhere in a park the first crocuses are pushing through. Violet and beige and grey. Something that wants to live but has not quite arrived yet. That tension carries through every photo you edit with this preset.

Technically, February works with a restrained colour palette. Highlights are not blown out but pulled back softly, as if the light is struggling to assert itself. Shadows stay dark without going fully black, carrying a slight teal cast that suggests cold air. Midtones sit just below neutral, adding depth without tipping into drama. Colours are desaturated but not flat: blue keeps its coldness, warm tones become more muted, and purple and violet hold their character slightly better than everything else around them.

This preset works well on street photography in flat winter light, outdoor portraits on overcast days, cityscapes with lots of stone and little colour, and nature shots in the transition from winter to early spring. Scenes with a single accent colour do particularly well here. A yellow coat, a purple flower, a red road sign, each one stands out because the rest of the frame steps back and makes space. Architecture with concrete or stone textures also responds well to February.

You reach for February when you want a photo that does not shout. When the mood of a day matters more than the sharpness of a detail. This preset suits photographers who work with available light and are comfortable with a grey frame. It was not made for summer street scenes or portraits in warm evening sun. But for that cold January day that already feels like February, it is exactly right.

A practical tip: lower your exposure slightly before applying the preset, roughly a third to half a stop below where you would normally leave it. February was designed for images that lean toward the dark side. A base exposure that is too bright takes the atmosphere away before the preset has a chance to work. After that, adjust highlights and shadows per image. That way you keep the mood intact while still making the photo your own.
