July burns. Not in an uncomfortable way, but in the way a summer day feels when you are standing right in the middle of it. Golden light, scorched edges, colours that have reached their peak with nowhere left to go. This preset captures that moment. Not as a nostalgic filter, but as an honest translation of what July does to a photograph when you get the edit right.

Technically, July works by pushing saturation in the warm tones. Orange and yellow gain weight. The shadows pick up a slight warm brown, the highlights stay open but take on a golden cast. There is contrast, but it is not harsh. It is the kind of contrast that adds depth without making the image feel heavy. The white balance leans warm. Not pushed to an extreme, but enough to hold on to that feeling of midday heat.

The preset works well on outdoor scenes in direct or angled sunlight. Street photography in summer, where heat and light combine to create atmosphere. Outdoor portraits, whether shot at golden hour or in full sun, where you want to lean into the warmth of the light rather than correct it away. Landscapes with dry grass, asphalt, open sandy ground. Scenes where green has already turned yellow-brown. July also works on urban environments with plenty of light and warm materials, stone, concrete, terracotta, where the heat feels baked into the surroundings.

You reach for this preset when a photo is already heading in the right direction but is missing a final step. The light was there, the atmosphere was there, but somewhere in the edit everything became flat. July fixes that. It amplifies what is already present. If the photograph itself lacks warmth, the preset will not invent it. Use it as an amplifier, not a rescue.

One practical tip: when working with portraits in bright sun, after applying the preset try lowering the orange luminance slightly in the HSL panel. Skin keeps its warmth but loses the overly toasted look that can appear quickly under direct light. A small adjustment is usually all it takes.
