Half a Memory

Bloem is not a cheerful preset. But it is not heavy either. It has the quality of an afternoon you half remember, a street you know but cannot quite place. Sepia-toned, with low saturation and a nostalgic feel that makes photographs look like something already drifting into memory while you are still looking at them. Inspired by the atmosphere of J.C. Bloem's work, the Dutch poet who wrote about transience without making it a burden.

Technically, Bloem pulls back saturation without removing colour entirely. Colour remains, but muted, as if the light comes through curtains. Shadows soften slightly, highlights cool down. Contrast sits low to medium, giving images a flat, almost printed quality. Warm tones shift gently toward sepia, cool tones stay closer to where they are. The result feels analogue without pretending to be film.

Bloem works well in street photography where atmosphere matters more than detail. People on benches, empty squares, wet pavement in autumn. Portraits also respond well, especially in soft and diffuse light, overcast days or window light in particular. Architecture with age and texture picks up nicely. Busy scenes with strong saturated colours are harder to work with. This preset wants quiet.

You reach for Bloem when you want a photograph to hold something rather than show something. When the moment is already gone by the time you press the shutter. It fits images where the emotion lives in the space around people, not on their faces. And it suits photography that does not need a caption but still wants to leave something behind.

A practical tip: apply Bloem and then reduce exposure by half a stop if the light in the image was already fairly bright. The preset breathes better in a slightly darker frame. Also keep an eye on the highlights in the sky. If they blow out too quickly, pull them back in Lightroom before making any further adjustments to the preset. That way the atmosphere holds.
