Character and mood

Star Rain is a preset for photographs that feel like a half-remembered dream. The deep blue shifts the night inward, and the soft silver glow recalls moonlight filtering through thin clouds. No exaggerated effects, no artificial drama. Just a mood that holds together.

Technically, the preset pushes shadows toward deep navy blue while highlights lift gently into cool silver. The contrast increases, but without becoming harsh. Fine detail in the midtones stays visible. Colour saturation is selectively reduced: warm tones recede almost entirely, while cool tones carry more weight. The result is a palette that feels quiet, composed and slightly outside of time.

Star Rain works best on night photographs, blue-hour shots and portraits taken in low light. Think of a figure beneath a streetlamp, an empty road after rain, a portrait by window light on an overcast evening. Landscapes featuring water or reflections also respond well, because the blue tones in mirrored surfaces gain extra depth. Street photography with strong shadows and scattered light sources is a natural fit.

You reach for Star Rain when you want a photograph to carry atmosphere without pushing it too hard. Not every night image needs to be dark and cinematic, but sometimes a scene asks for exactly that tone. When the colour and light in your original frame already lean that way, this preset strengthens the feeling rather than replacing it.

A practical tip: lower your exposure by half a stop before applying the preset. Star Rain performs best when the image is already a little darker than your default exposure would produce. After applying it, adjust exposure in Lightroom if needed. That approach keeps the depth in the shadows intact and prevents the dark blue tones from shifting towards grey.
