If you shoot automotive lifestyle and want images that feel considered rather than processed, this is where to start.

The preset shifts the color balance toward warm red tones in the midrange while pulling the highlights back just enough to keep saturation in check. Shadows are deepened through a tonal curve adjustment, which is what gives the image its velvety quality. You will notice that burgundy, dark brown, copper and cognac tones respond well, coming through with richness rather than flatness. Cooler hues like blue and green are gently suppressed so the warm color family takes the lead without creating obvious color conflict. Contrast is built gradually, not abruptly.

Velvet Red works best on red, burgundy and dark-colored cars, especially when the light is doing something interesting. Evening light, warm studio or garage setups, and overcast days with soft diffused light all suit it well. It also works in driver portraits where a leather interior or dark dashboard plays a role in the background. Bright midday sun on white or silver cars gives the preset little warm material to work with, and the results will feel forced rather than natural.

One practical tip: underexpose your shot by half to one stop before applying the preset. Velvet Red performs better on slightly darker raw files. The shadows become richer and the depth of the effect is more pronounced. If the highlights feel too heavy after applying, bring the whites down carefully until the detail in the lightest parts of the paint comes back without losing the overall mood.
