Character and mood

High Tide is the preset for rough weather at sea. When the waves rise, the water turns dark and there is menace in the air. The look is deep and firm, with strength in the blue and weight in the image. Not a soft coastal mood, but a sea that wants something from you.

Here is what the preset does: the blue is saturated and gains depth, while the blacks stay dark and full. Contrast is firmed up, so the waves take on texture and the water takes on mass. The sky stays clear alongside this, so the image does not clog up but keeps room above the horizon. The colours are powerful without turning overdone.

The look suits waves, surf and dramatic seas. A storm rolling in, water striking the pier, a dark horizon with a single strip of light. Rocky coastlines and rough landscapes at the water's edge also pick up that heaviness and tension.

You choose High Tide when you want strength and depth in the blue, without turning the whole photo dark. The difference from a plain contrast boost is the balance: the water gains weight, but the sky keeps breathing. That way you hold on to drama and readability at once.

A practical tip: use a faster shutter speed to capture the structure of the waves, because that texture is what makes this look strong. Freeze the water and the deep blue has something to hold on to. Watch the blacks in the shadow areas of the waves, and lift them a fraction if too much detail disappears. That keeps the menace in place without the image closing up.
