Log footage
Log is a recording profile that captures as much detail as possible in shadows and highlights, at the cost of a good-looking image straight away. Your footage looks flat and greyish, but holds far more color information to grade with. It's deliberately unfinished so you decide the look later.
Shooting in log gets the maximum dynamic range out of your camera, ideal for high-contrast scenes. Before grading you bring the image back to normal with a technical LUT or a color space transform. In DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro virtually all cinema cameras work with log. Tip: expose log slightly to the bright side, so your shadows stay noise-free.
