The Masters

Raw, heavy, close-up. Ed van der Elsken photographed Amsterdam and Paris with a directness that makes you uncomfortable — and then won't let go. High contrast, film grain, night streets. Inspired by the style of Ed van der Elsken. Not affiliated with or endorsed by his estate.

Character and mood

Ad van Aalst is not a preset for soft light and flattering tones. It presses hard on the image. High contrast, coarse grain, shadows that close in tight. The mood is night, concrete, closeness. Inspired by the work of Ed van der Elsken, the Amsterdam photographer who pushed his camera into people's faces and never flinched. This preset does the same to your photographs.

Technically, Ad van Aalst pulls the shadows down without fully burning out the highlights. The grain is visible and textured, not decorative. Colors are stripped of much of their saturation, but not entirely. A trace of warmth remains in skin tones, a cool glow in rain-slicked asphalt under street light. The contrast is high and direct. The curve is steep through the midtones. What you get is an image that feels present, as if it lived through a place rather than photographed it.

This preset works best on night photography and street scenes lit by artificial light: neon signs, shop windows, lamp posts on wet pavement. But portraits taken in hard ambient light respond well too. People in motion, people who are not posing, people who almost meet your lens. Scenes with backlight, busy backgrounds, little breathing room in the frame. The closer you are to your subject, the stronger the effect.

You reach for Ad van Aalst when you want a photograph to carry tension. Not just the tension of composition or timing, but the tension of proximity. Of something that is just a little too close. If you shoot street photography that should not look polished, or portraits that are allowed to be honest rather than pretty, this preset fits that intention.

One practical tip: expose your source file slightly darker than you normally would before applying the preset. Ad van Aalst works with shadow, and if your base image is already bright, you lose the character in the dark zones. Underexpose by half a stop to a full stop and you give the preset the room it needs to do its work.
