The Masters

Kodachrome at its most electric. Harry Gruyaert photographed Morocco, Belgium and the whole world with colours that feel almost too intense — until you realise that's just how it is. Deep reds, bright blue, golden warm light. Inspired by the style of Harry Gruyaert. Not affiliated with or endorsed by him or Magnum Photos.

Character and mood

Henri Grijsaard does not work quietly. It pushes colour hard, with no apology. Red walls go deep, almost burgundy, with something burning inside them. Blue skies take on a saturation that feels almost wrong, until you realise you have seen it before, on a late afternoon in a city you barely knew. That is the register of Harry Gruyaert, the Belgian Magnum photographer who used Kodachrome like it was an argument. Henri Grijsaard is built on that approach.

In technical terms, the preset lifts the shadows slightly so they hold detail without going soft. Highlights stay present but do not blow out. The contrast comes not from a classic S-curve but from colour relationships: cool tones deepen, warm tones come forward. The white balance leans gold in midday light without turning skin orange. In the HSL panel, reds and oranges are pushed up in saturation and slightly lowered in luminance, while blues and cyans are weighted heavier. That produces the combination of warm light and cool space that runs through Gruyaert's work.

The preset is strongest on images with clear areas of flat colour. Street photography in southern light, markets, painted facades, interiors where artificial light meets daylight from a window. Outdoor portraits work well too, provided the background has something to offer. A grey wall or green park gives it little to work with. A yellow cab, a blue door, a red curtain behind glass: that is where Henri Grijsaard pays off.

You reach for this preset when a photo should feel like a place, not just document it. When you sense the scene was more vivid than your raw file suggests. Gruyaert was not an exaggerator. He was precise. Henri Grijsaard tries to follow that logic. Not every image suits it, but when it fits, you know immediately.

One practical note: try reducing your exposure by half a stop to a full stop before applying the preset, especially on bright outdoor shots. Henri Grijsaard works better on images that are slightly darker than you might naturally expose. The colours need room to develop, and they find it more readily in the shadows than in the light.
